The University Hospital of Santander, HUS, is experiencing a serious financial crisis. This was confirmed by Omar Ochoa, representative of Bucaramanga, during the inspection visit in the facilities of the hospital center.

"The HUS portfolio indicators are worrisome. The national government must intervene with the HUS to develop a shock plan covering the pending portfolio payment by EPS and the same secretariat to Santander's health," Omar Ochoa said.

Following the call of Julian Niño, head of the HUS, on the need to set up a working table to find solutions to the crisis, the Bucaramanga Personería went to check the financial and operational conditions of the HUS.

By the end of October, about $ 230 billion owed PSE to SHU. In addition to this, over $ 6 billion in assistance to the "uninsured poor" includes medical services to Venezuelan migrants.

It is important to mention that in previous months, the national government had allocated about $ 700 million to Santander for the payment of migrants' debt. However, this amount would only cover 10% of current liabilities.

Emergency alert

The HUS situation has worsened since October, when the adult emergency department exceeded its capacity to treat patients.

As Vanguardia Liberal reports, almost twice as many people are treated daily in this area.

Julián Niño, HUS manager, explained that although the emergency unit has 90 beds, nearly 160 people are supported.

This crisis implies less worthy conditions for users. Corridors and elevators have been converted into hospitalization areas due to overcrowding.

Faced with this situation, the representative of the municipality stated that the national government should take urgent measures.

"We will intervene with the Ministry of Health to demand a plan of joint actions to save the public finances of this entity," he said.

He called the department to evaluate other possibilities in health care.

"Bucaramanga, for example, needs to start thinking about the need to install an infrastructure to decongest the HUS that receives all the cargo from eastern Colombia," Ochoa said.

Employees denounce payment arrears

The crisis is also affecting employees. Outsourced workers at the University Hospital of Santander denounced the delay in paying their salaries. Some of them assured Vanguardia Liberal that the last payment they had received occurred in October and that this credit corresponds to August. That is, they perform nearly three months late payment.

"What worries us is that responsibility is exercised between them, whereas the cooperative to which we are affiliated says that it is doing everything possible, but that the SHU owes it five months, the Manager assures that he is late only in 45 days. You do not know who to believe and we are the injured, "said one of HUS 'employees.

According to the employee, the situation for him and his companions becomes difficult. "We have to bring the daily bread at home, we have to lend, apply for credit and pay high interest because we have no other choice and we have to keep working. compañeras cry, because they are mothers who are heads of households and they charge rent or do not have to fulfill the obligations of their children, "he said.
