LG G7 ThinQ, the smartphone that focuses on the sound | ANALYSIS | Trade | Technology and science | Mobile phones

[ad_1]

It was one of those missing. LG also enters the dance of high-end smartphones and introduced in Peru its new G7 ThinQ a smartphone that follows the premium line of its predecessor but is no longer focused at once in what he can offer with his dual purpose, but in the audio.

But before continuing with this analysis, let us first see the main features that this smartphone brings :

Dimensions : 153.2 mm x 71.9 mm x 7 , 9 mm and a weight of 162 grams
Screen : 6.1 inches, 1440 x 3120 pixels resolution, IPS LCD, Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection.
Processor : Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, eight-core CPU Hearts
Memory : 6 GB of RAM
Internal Storage : 64 GB

DESIGN

There was an important jump from G5 to G6. Now, in the evolution of the G6 at G7 ThinQ the meaning in the design remains. Rounded corners, glass finish at the front and back (on both sides with Corning Gorilla Glass protection). Without a doubt, it is a design that keeps the air premium. In terms of certifications, this model repeats: the IP68, which gives the equipment a resistance to dust and water; and the STD 810g, which is a military certification that in addition to resistance offers protection against fluid contamination, etc.

This smartphone does not have a button on the front. On the right side has only one button, which is used to turn on and off the equipment. On the left, a button provides direct access to Google Assistant. On these are controls to increase or decrease the volume. In particular, I was not comfortable with the extra button as I was constantly squeezing it and any current task was paused to give dominance to the wizard. But if you're already used to using it, maybe you'll see it as a benefit.

On the LG smartphone is the tray for the nano SIM and the micro SD, as well as a microphone. In the lower part there is the 3.5mm headphone jack, USB type C input and speaker.

On the back of G7 ThinQ there are slight changes: the two cameras are no longer located next to each other, but now have a vertical orientation ( one on the other), and below is the already distinctive fingerprint reader (which is no longer a button). At the center of the equipment is the model name of this smartphone and below, silver letters the brand logo. Very careful: it's a fingerprint magnet

In short, the design realizes that you have a smartphone that feels great in your hand, lightweight and with a very good finish.

SCREEN

The ] LG G7 ThinQ has a 6 "screen, with a very bright panel and IPS technology. An interesting problem is that the automatic adjustment of brightness is added a temporary increase in brightness for the comfort of the user in difficult light conditions.Although it brings HDR technology (which is not new), this smartphone of LG still shows the slightly washed-up images.

This is a thin smartphone with a ratio of 18: 6: 1 giving it a more vertical look and, therefore, two things very important: better ergonomics and more space for what will be shown on the screen.

Following a trend of which I am not a big fan, the G7 ThinQ has also a border or a notch. And as with other branded smartphones, there is also an option for extinguishing re (complete with a black or colored bar).

PERFORMANCE

This smartphone features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor that goes very well and a 6GB RAM. The G7 ThinQ is a team that is doing well. Although I have over – demanded with many applications, photos and other content, after a few weeks of use for specific times has shown slight delays, but this is not a constant. With heavy applications, dual screen work and orientation changes, it responds well.

This device inherits the old models of the Always on Display very useful and somewhat improved. One of the things I did not like very much, is that its customization layer – which does not bother, but which you have to adapt if you have never used it before – does not bother. has undergone no apparent improvement. Except for some functions like the Smart Doctor, which can diagnose the key elements of the smartphone (but this is a function that almost all competing devices possess).

CAMERAS

This section has mixed feelings. The reason? Although the G5 and G6 cameras were not the best of their time, I was very pleased with their dual lens proposal: a regular and a wide angle. In the G5, this last lens gave a larger area of vision not only interesting but useful. For photos, I did not need to go too far to have, for example, a full facade or a photo of a corner or photo of an archaeological site. And when I had it in video mode, a stabilizer was activated which gave a very good effect. The main problem was that the image was distorted on both sides. This was corrected in the G6, where the angle decreased a bit and the effect was much better. While in the G7 ThinQ cameras work – I believe – very well, I expected a little more to this smartphone .

This time, the cameras of G7 ThinQ comes with IMX 351 lenses of 16 megapixels each; the first with a focal aperture of 1.6, 30 mm, 1 / 3.1 ", optical image stabilizer (OIS), laser autofocus, the second has a focal aperture of 1.9 (in angle), 16 mm, 1/3/1 without autofocus. The front camera of this smartphone is a single lens, 8 megapixel, with a focal aperture of 1.9 and 26 mm

It s is a proposal for cameras that are, in general, good.It has good light input, as well as a correct interpretation of colors. You can see the performance of the cameras of the smartphone in this gallery .

Regarding the software, the G7 ThinQ debuts in the inclusion of artificial intelligence for automatic detection of scenarios It has several options, but sometimes it depends a lot on the lighting conditions to choose one.Includes the portrait mode, which allows you to blur the background. re-plan, and the option of Google Lens, to do some research – from the same native application of the camera – from images. I have tried other equipment with this function and I think that smartphone is good, but does not react as fast as in others.

And here is the part that does not leave me happy with the main cameras of this smartphone . If the wide angle of the G5 was 135 °, then it was reduced in the G6 to 125 °, now in the G7 ThinQ it is only 107 °. Although the distortion is completely reduced, in particular it seems to me that you are losing some of the grace that this lens gave in previous versions. However, in video mode, it maintains the stabilization.

And speaking of video, this allows to record in 4K HDR. And if you're someone who prefers LG's smartphones to do multimedia content, be aware that it keeps its openness to audio accessories. That is, it recognizes all kinds of external microphones, of course, being able to configure audio inputs if the software you use allows it.

Among the new modes included in the native application of the smartphone camera G7 ThinQ are – in addition to the automatic and manual for photo and video – the Cinema Video mode (which allows you to zoom very softly up to a certain point); the mode of food; slow camera; panorama; Flash Jump-Cut (to make gifs); timelapse; and the 360 panorama. Of all this, the Cinema Video works very well.

AUDIO

It is there that LG put several interesting things to his new smartphone . For starters, there is a 3.5mm jack for headphones. When connected in this manner, the G7 ThinQ activates the Quad HiFi DAC system (a processor that converts the signal from digital to analog, quad-core) that reduces distortion and increases the accuracy of the signal. Audio, on the whole when you use a very high-end headphones. It also brings DTS: X 3D Surround Sound technology, which helps improve sound quality when very thin headphones are not used.
