Netflix will adapt for an animated series the most famous novels of the British writer Roald Dahl, such as "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "Matilda" and "The big boned giant," according to a statement.

The platform signed an agreement with the heirs of the giant of children's literature, who died in 1990, who has sold more than 200 million books worldwide.

Most of his works have already been the subject of many adaptations, both in theater and cinema, including "Charlie", whose first version had been presented on the big screen in 1971 and a second in 2005.

Most of them have been with real actors, with the exception of "Fantastic Mr Fox", filmed with stop motion technique or stop motion animation.

The adaptations of Netflix will not be movies but series in several episodes, inspired by the books of Roald Dahl.

"Netflix wants to stay true to the spirit and tone of the author, while creating an original universe beyond the books," the video-on-demand service said in a joint statement with the heirs from Roald Dahl.

"Our mission, deliberately ambitious, is to enable as many children as possible to experience the unique magical and positive message contained in Roald Dahl's stories," said Felicity Dahl, widow of the writer, in the statement.

"Our goal is to reinvent the adventures of many of Dahl's iconic characters in an innovative and contemporary way," said Melissa Cobb, vice president of content for children and the family at Netflix.

The agreement covers 16 titles in total. The production of the first animated series based on Roald Dahl's universe is due out in 2019.
