(CNN) – Reggae, a type of Jamaican folk music, has been inscribed on the United Nations Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
UNESCO made this announcement Thursday at the 13th session of the Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Mauritius, East Africa.
The list of intangible cultural heritage aims to "illustrate the diversity of intangible heritage and contribute to a greater awareness of its importance," according to the UNESCO website.
"Reggae music was the voice of the marginalized," said UNESCO in the recently added inscription of this type of music. "His contribution to the international discourse on issues of injustice, resistance, love and humanity emphasizes that the dynamics of the element is at once cerebral, sociopolitical, sensual and spiritual. ".
