The owner of Confiep, Roque Benavides, argues that there is a campaign against the private sector. He says that he will collaborate with the prosecution.

– You said that there was a campaign against the private sector, on behalf of whom and why?
Confiep provided all the documentation on the contributions made in 2011 for a campaign for private enterprise. Everything was put in the bank and handed over to the prosecutor. However, the investigation continues with Mr Ricardo Briceño and the Confiep. We think that if, after giving this information, we are not excluded from this case, there must be other motivations.

– What is the content of the quote made by the prosecutor Jose Domingo Pérez during the survey on contributions to the campaign Keiko Fujimori in 2011?
In 2011, there was a presidential campaign and the public was confused about the benefits of private enterprise. We consider it essential to carry out an advertising campaign to show these kindnesses. More than 30 companies donated money and one of them was Odebrecht, while there was still no corruption scandal. Now, with this investigation, they say that Odebrecht's money went to Keiko Fujimori's campaign, nothing could be further from the truth.

– Why are you talking about it?
They say that there was a coordination meeting for this campaign for the private company at the offices of Minas Buenaventura. Interestingly, I could not attend this meeting because I was traveling. However, they continue to quote me.

– Will he answer?
Of course, we will collaborate. The prosecution and the judiciary are institutions that we must support. Like any neighbor, I have to respect the laws of Peru.

– What self-criticism do you make as a representative of the Confiep for acts of corruption that affect the country?
The self-criticism must be like the Peruvian. We must defend ourselves against what the burden of corruption means. All Peruvians must fight against this: businesses, unions, the executive, the legislature and society as a whole.

– Do you think that the asylum application of former president Alan García has support?
Everyone has the right to ask for asylum. A person who has twice been President of the Republic has surely considered that it did not respect the rules of the procedure. I am not the only one to judge.

– Is there political persecution in the country?
I do not think there is any political persecution. What is an influence in the judiciary by NGOs such as IDL and the Lord [Gustavo] Gorriti, which publishes information down. You must be very careful about how this information is processed.

– Would this be a bad sign for investors that Uruguay grants asylum?
It is a question of international diplomacy. Uruguay, as an independent country with a very strong democracy, will have to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages and decide whether to give asylum or not.
