The Ministry of Transport and Communications ( MTC ) Decided not to renew for the fourth time two telephony concessions granted to the telecommunications company, Phone . These concessions came from Spanish society since 1994 and expire in 2027.
In a statement, Mario Coronado, Telefónica del Peru's chief regulatory officer, said the company "disagreed" with the decision made by the MTC.
"We particularly disagree with the methodology used, which does not take into account our contribution to telecommunication development in the country and which is unprecedented at the international level," said Coronado.
In this regard, the executive stated that the rules of the game in the renewal process had been changed and that they were affecting future dealerships in the industry.
"This statement has implications beyond the renewal contracts and Telefónica del Perú, and the lack of predictability can affect the climate that seeks to attract investment to reduce the infrastructure deficit," he said.
These two contracts were awarded to Telefónica in 1994 and the government renewed them three times. However, he rejected the fourth renewal application requested in December 2013.
This decision was based on a report by the Private Telecommunications Investment Supervisory Agency (Osiptel), which warned that the company had exceeded the 80% limit of violations of sectoral regulations and Peruvian legislation in the course of the evaluated period, from 1 of 2009 to 27 June 2014.
