The number of deaths of children aged under 14 due to cancer in Brazil has decreased by 13.4% in a decade, from 2,222 in 2006 to 1,924 in 2016, according to data released today. 39 by the Ministry of Health for the fight against cancer.

According to official data, the death rate from neoplasms among children aged 5 to 14 rose from 6.2 per 100,000 in 2006 to 4.9 per 100,000 in 2016, while children under 5 decreased from 7.7 to 6.1 during the same period.

"We found that early detection of cancer was crucial for the reduction of mortality, which is essential to obtain better results, it is necessary to have an early diagnosis to be able to accelerate the treatment," said the Director of the Department of Noncommunicable Diseases. from the Ministry, Fátima Marinho, quoted in the statement.

The official assured that, for the reduction of infant mortality due to cancer, technological advances in the treatment of the disease also contributed, which allowed the reduction of many useless procedures.

According to the specialist, advances in medicine currently treat 80% of cancer children and adolescents who are diagnosed in time and have a good quality of life after treatment.

The Ministry of Health said that, despite the reduction in mortality, cancer remains the leading cause of death among children aged 5 to 14 years.

According to figures reported, childhood cancer represents 3% of cancers in Brazil.

The number of new cases of cancer among children and adolescents under the age of 19 is projected to reach 12,600 per year in 2019.
