After Jacob deGrom scored a scoreless run earlier in the game, the talented young Mets duo Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil made his first appearances in the career all-star game at Cleveland.
The evening finally belonged to the AL, which won a 4 to 3 victory, but the impressive race of Alonso in Cleveland was undoubtedly one of the biggest stories of baseball.
One night after winning the Home Run Derby crown, Alonso took part in his first all-star game at the end of the fourth inning. His first at the bat came at the top of the sixth, while he was falling swaying against Oakland Liam Hendriks.
His second at bat came in a much bigger place. While the Dutch led 4-1 early in the eighth inning, the polar bear delivered the goals loaded, thus raising a single past to a leap Gleyber Torres score two points and bring AL's lead back to a point.
Alonso became the first Met since Lee Mazzilli to have a multi-RBI performance in the game of the stars.
"It was great," said Alonso after the match. "I came in a big place and I just wanted to do well, not just for the National League or for myself, but also for the Mets I thought this weekend All-Star was really great. as if I had done a really good job of representing the New York Mets.
"If you ever told me that I would have gone 1-2 with two [RBIs] and win a Home Run Derby Championship, it's a hell of a weekend. It is only a dream come true. "
Alonso has made a name among Mets fans over the first half of his rookie season, crushing 30 home runs on a record pace. But this appearance of the weekend All-Star propelled Alonso on the national scene. He won with a derby win and a strong performance in the All-Star Game.
"I have the impression of having won this weekend, just taking full advantage," Alonso said. "I am so grateful to have the opportunity to be here." Being in this locker room is an incredible honor.
"I'm just grateful for every opportunity and this has been an absolute dream come true.I can not be grateful enough.I look forward to continuing to work hard and play well."

McNeil had a quieter night than his rookie counterpart. His night began at the bottom of the sixth. The first major league kicker entered the game on the left field, assuring two ball outflows in the first run.
His first at-bat came at the top of the eighth with two against Cleveland's Brad Hand. McNeil threw a lazy flying ball to the left, ending his only game of the night.
Nevertheless, McNeil can keep his head up and be proud of everything he has accomplished over the past year.
"From Double-A last year, I did not think it would happen so fast," McNeil said. "It's great, I loved every minute and I hope my career continues to progress and I continue to progress well.
"Personally, I know I've had a good first half – I'm just going to keep that confidence in the second half and hope to win some wins."
