Turkey will not go unpunished if it receives Russia's S-400 air defense missiles, a US State Department official told CNBC on Tuesday.
"We stress that Turkey will face very real and negative consequences if it completes its delivery of the S-400," the official said, according to CNBC.
The United States has threatened to impose sanctions on Turkey for its purchase of weapons, which would be contrary to commitments made by NATO. But it is not clear when Washington will approve the measures or how hard they might be.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said last month that US President Donald Trump had declared that Turkey had been unfairly treated for the purpose of equipping itself with a US air defense system and that sanctions would not be applied. The Turkish president has accused those outside the White House of these threats, saying he has good relations with Trump.
Turkey is expected to receive the S-400 system as of this week, according to news reports.
