Mayhew, 74, died on April 30 with his family at his side in his North Texas home. He is survived by his wife Angie and three children.
The Hollywood icon played Chewbacca in the original "Star Wars" trilogy, episode 3 of the series and the new trilogy, according to a statement from his family.
Mayhew, who has already used a wheelchair, stood up to represent Chewbacca in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens". He also consulted "The Last Jedi" to help teach his successor.
"He put his heart and soul in the role of Chewbacca and it was seen in every frame of the movies since his knee-high knee stroke, drawing from his bow to the hip, from his bright blue eyes, to his knees. with every subtle movement of his head and mouth, "his family said. Mayhew created the Peter Mayhew Foundation to help people in crisis, including providing food and supplies to Venezuelan children on their recent journey to freedom.
"Her kindness, generosity and attention will continue to the Peter Mayhew Foundation, where Angie will take the helm," said her family.
A memorial service for friends and family will be held on June 29th. In early December, a memorial will be held in Los Angeles for fans.
