The Jamaican Minister of Energy assured that the state-owned oil refinery had undertaken the infrastructural and operational upgrades needed to comply with the new global standards for sulfur content in the bunker fuel .
Fayval Williams gave assurances that the new International Maritime Organization (IMO) legislation regulating the sulfur content in marine fuels would come into force in January 2020.
The new law requires that the sulfur content of marine fuels used by ships be reduced from 3.5% to 0.5%.
According to the Minister of Energy, Petrojam is ready to supply 0.5% bunker fuel at the right price and with sufficient quality.
Williams delivered the Keynote Address at the Gala Dinner at the 2nd Caribbean Bunkers Conference organized by the Jamaica Maritime Authority / International Bunker Association on September 12 at the Iberostar Suites Resort.
She said that the state-owned oil refinery, which began offering bunker fuels in 2001, had made significant progress in supplying it and meeting international standards.
"Over the past year, Petrojam has increased its bunker fuel sales at all ports on the island, continued to supply its low-sulfur marine gas oil and established a long-term bulk supply of fuel. pipeline to Ocho Rios, under a lease agreement with West Indies Petroleum, "Williams said. .
"In 2016, the refinery introduced ultra-low sulfur diesel as bunker fuel and in 2017, the entity began supplying RMK 500 (high viscosity oil). Currently, Petrojam provides 0.5% sulfur-sourced sea oil directly to its customers, Ready to Work Oil (RTW), all Jamaica ports, intermediate fuel oil, ultra low grade diesel sulfur at 15 parts per million and low sulfur to bunkers. sale to ships, "she added.
The Minister of Energy pointed out that the local market for bunker fuel was about 3.5 million barrels and that sales volume was about two million barrels a year, which accounted for about 15% of local sales. of Petrojam.
"Petrojam is in the process of preparing all the infrastructure, operation and procurement work required to prepare for the switchover," she said.
