The Philadelphia Union scored five times in the second half to defeat the New England Revolution 6-1 at Talen Energy Stadium on Saturday night. After the teams had scored 1-1 1-1 at half-time with goals from Jack Elliott and Juan Fernando Caicedo, the Union returned to the attack in the second half and went on a rampage with Ilsinho's goals, Sergio Santos (2), Kacper Przybylko. and David Accam.
Jim Curtin made only one change to the team that beat FC Cincinnati midway through the week. Kai Wagner was coming back from the suspension to recover his place at the back left. He then replaced Ray Gaddis and Olivier Mbaizo on the bench.
A frenzied newbie in the 10th minute was marked by a fantastic double by Carlos Coronel at one end and then an even better goal from Jack Elliott to the other. Coronel was strong enough to deny DeJuan Jones from 10 yards, pushing off his shot from the post, then quickly going up to get tall and save Juan Fernando Caicedo's rebound chance with his foot, almost falling to a slot to do it.
After the rebound of the backup, the Union took the ball in the other direction in a quick sequence that ended when Ray Gaddis won a corner on the right side. While New England initially set the corner, the ball fell on Haris Medunjanin who sent a ball into the box for Elliott, who had stayed ahead. The defender took a deft touch to drop the pass, then turned quickly and shot a half-volley at the far post 14 yards. An excellent finish for the center of the back.
New England would equalize in the 36th minute. Brenden Aaronson was injured in the hip and had to be replaced. Before Ilsinho could enter the field, the Revolution would level through Caicedo. Edgar Castillo put a ball in the field and drove the right into New England. With the back of the Union behind him, Castillo was able to wait for Caicedo, who lost Auston Trusty, before slipping on the Castillo pass and catching the goal behind Coronel 7 yards.
Philadelphia would regain the advantage just after halftime thanks to Ilsinho. The Brazilian recovered the ball on the right touchline, overtook Castillo, played a ball in Monteiro near the corner of the box, then made a pass backwards at full speed. The midfielder, cooly, pushed Cropper's shoulder close to the post. The goal came in the 47th minute.
Philadelphia would get a third in the 69th minute. A good job at the bottom left found Kai Wagner with leeway to make a center. The left-back has been hit by a terrific ball that Santos has just secured to deflect the ball from a New England defender and Cropper.
Santos would add a second in the 74th minute. Another good job of Ilsinho on the right side gave Kacper Pryzbylko the advantage. The attacker's shot was well saved by Cropper, but Santos was about to take the rebound four yards.
Pryzbylko will add his third goal in as many games in the 82nd minute. Once again, Ilsinho was involved, this time combining with Bedoya and finding the Union captain with a superb ball back behind the New England defense. Bedoya led the baseline before bringing the ball back to Pryzbylko, who scored the bottom of the net at 8 yards.
David Accam entered the match only in the 85th minute but did not waste time adding his name to the score sheet with a goal in the 88th minute. Santos did well to push the ball to the left side and fired a shot that Cropper had to push back. But Santos was the fastest rebounder who shot a center that Cropper could only get into the Accam trajectory, which was tapping at close range.
The six objectives correspond to the best offensive production of the Union. They will be in action next Saturday for a clash at the summit of the Eastern Conference of Toronto FC.
Three points:
- Second half-time – After New England did well to keep the game tied in the first half, a ruthless attack from the Union put the game out of sight in the second half. Jim Curtin and the players both said that there was not much to say at half-time and that the players knew that they needed to improve. They improved by five goals
- Hey, Sergio! – Sergio Santos had his first match since March and left his mark with two goals. The striker also forced Cropper to make some good saves. Jim Curtin joked that he should have scored five. He should also have left this cross for which Ray Gaddis ran 30 meters. The right back seemed destined to score, but Santos settled in front of him to deny the opportunity.
- Carlos Coronel – The Union's third love at first hit a double double and nearly lost its temper to prevent Caicedo from touching his foot. It was as good as seeing a goalkeeper score for the Union this season.
