Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 29) – Three Caloocan policemen were convicted of murdering Kian delos Santos, 17, during an anti-drug operation.
Judge Rodolfo Azucena, president of Caloocan Regional Court of First Instance 125, was sentenced to the position of police officer (OR) 3, Arnel Oares, M1 Jeremias Pereda and M1 Jerwin Cruz, punishable by 40 years in prison.
However, the court overturned the filing of evidence and the case of illicit drugs.
Kian, a Grade 11 student, was found lying dead in a fetal position with gunshots to the head after a so-called "one-off, big-time" anti-illegal drug operation conducted by Caloocan police on 16 August 2017.
Police said the miner had unsheathed a gun, prompting them to retaliate. However, testimony and closed circuit television showed two men in plain clothes dragging Kian across a basketball court. Two small packets of shabu suspects, a .45 caliber rifle and four cartridge cases were found at the scene of the encounter. The Caloocan police claimed that Kian was a drug smuggler, but the teenage family vehemently denied this allegation.
Kian's death sparked public outrage and cast doubt on the government's war on drugs controversy.
