Seven former Las Piñas police officers linked to kidnappings and alleged extortions surrendered to the authorities.
PO 1 Erickson Rivera was the first to go to the police on Wednesday. His alleged members – PO3 Joel Lupig, PO2 Vener Guanlao, PO1 Mark Jefferson Fulgenio, PO1 Jeffrey De Leon, PO2 Jayson Arrelano and PO1 Raymart Gomez – surrendered later the same day, police said Thursday. .
The police were accompanied by their lawyers and relatives, according to the police report.
Their surrender follows a trespassing operation for alleged extortion on November 21 by joint police units, which led to the arrest of a 13-year-old student.
The student identified his cohorts as being the officers of the police anti-drug unit of the city of Las Piñas. The suspects, however, avoided being arrested at the time.
The suspects reportedly kidnapped and accused a minor of selling drugs, but promised to release him in exchange for 200,000 pesos.
According to some reports, the negotiations between the parties raised the amount to 30,000 pesos, which the student would have received through the victim's sister.
Chief Superintendent Guillermo Eleazar, director of the National Capital Region Police Bureau, dismissed Chief of Police Las Piñas Town, the Chief Superintendent. Marion Balonglong and the entire 36-member narcotics unit will allow an impartial investigation into the incident.
