Pacquiao arrives at Gensan on Monday
Barely two days after his victory over Lucas KO against Matthysse this weekend, Manny Pacquiao is now sought after by aspiring enemy contenders in the 147 pound welterweight limit.
At least eight fighters in the light welterweight limit of 147 pounds have shown interest in a possible confrontation with Pacquiao. They include Keith Thurman, Errol Spence, Terence Crawford, Danny Garcia, Amir Khan, Adrien Broner, Shawn Porter and Jeff Horn.
While everyone on the list would be a competitive match for Pacquiao, two of them would stand out as the best possible choices for Pacquiaos' next fight. They are Amir Khan and Adrien Broner.
Khan and Broner salivated for a fight against Pacquiao for a number of years but they ended up being sidelined due to a disagreement in sharing scholarships. Both Khan and Broner are aware of the enormous income that they can bring to the table with their talents in marketing and promoting the fight.
Broner is an expert in fighting a tough fight to sell with his antics and bad boy image while Khan has his own bailiwick in the UK that could possibly fill Wembley's stadium at the rim.
Pacquiao is done with boxing insofar as his legacy is concerned. For him, there is nothing more to prove to have been crowned as the only world champion of the eight divisions. His successive bouts would likely be geared towards generating more revenue for his own MP Promotions business.
Adrian Broner.
There is a good reason why Pacquiao would choose Broner or Khan for his next fight and this has to do with his revenue generation target. Money is the key to a lucrative fight against Pacquiao right now as he would need substantial funds to support his political career.
Rumors circulate that Pacquiao is considering a higher position in the government in the presidential elections of 2022.
Khan and Broner are easier to sell to fans than others in the list. They also have good relationships with sports journalists and the media in general.
While Crawford and Vasyl Lomachenko have been branded as possible opponents of Pacquiao, their promoter Bob Arum now estimates that Pacquiao will not be competitive against Crawford judging by his performance against Jeff Horn.
But now that Pacquiao has regained his speed and power, as evidenced by his victory over TKO against Matthysse on Saturday night, Arum may now have a change of mind to justify a possible clash between Crawford and Pacquiao.
In the case of Lomachenko, there is no certainty that it will be effective in the weight limit of 147 pounds. Lomachenko has been beaten as a lightweight since 2016. Although he seems unbeatable as a lightweight fighter, there is no guarantee that he will swell to 147 pounds overnight and he always be competitive.
Still, Arum needs to re-examine his relationship with Pacquiao who was quoted earlier for saying that his contract with Arums Top Rank Promotions has already expired.
