LOS ANGELES – The creator of "SpongeBob SquarePants", Stephen Hillenburg, who has led the television, film and stage world cartoon underwater, Bikini Bottom, died at 57, the channel said on Tuesday. Nickelodeon television.

Hillenburg had said last year that he was suffering from the neurodegenerative disease called ALS, also called Lou Gehrig's disease. He died Monday.

Hillenburg was a professor of marine biology in southern California when he started creating marine creatures as educational tools.
