LOS ANGELES – John Wall scored 36 points and 11 assists, Bradley Beal added 32 and the Washington Wizards caught up 17 points to beat the Houston Rockets 135-131 in overtime on Monday.
The Wizards defeated James Harden, the Rockets goaltender, who had 54 points.
Washington started overtime with a limited 8-1 run when Otto Porter Jr. picked up a volley and fed Beal for a dunk with a time remaining at 1:50, and the Rockets were not closer than three points at the end of the course.
Houston shot twice in seven overtime with four turnovers.
Harden missed three consecutive shots and returned the ball twice in the final minutes of regularization, but gave Clint Capela the advantage for a driveway that allowed him to tie, 125-125, to 9.8 seconds from the end. Wall had lost the ball during a jumper attempt with 1.2 seconds to go, then he was blocking Eric Gordon's jumper to the ring.
Markief Morris had 22 points and 10 rebounds while the Wizards' bench beat the Rockets 45-9.
Gordon scored 36 points, and Capela earned 17 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks for Houston, who lost three games in a row.
Harden had 11 assists, 8 rebounds and 13 turnovers in 47 minutes.
The Rockets were without guard Chris Paul (hamstring) for a second consecutive game. Backup guard Gerald Green (painful right ankle) was also missing.
Washington center Dwight Howard (gluteal pain) remains absent.
Harden scored 21 points in the third quarter while the Rockets scored 18-4 at the end of the period to take an eight-point lead that was reduced to four at the end of the game.
The Rockets took a 17-point lead in the first quarter behind Gordon and Harden, who totaled 25 points over the period. Washington scored 34-28 in 15-4, but the Rockets pushed their lead to 42-30 at the end of the quarter when they hit seven three-pointers.
It was the third time of the season that the Wizards were giving up 40 points or more in a quarter.
The Wizards rallied in the second quarter and led 67-65 at intermission.
PACERS PUMMEL JAZZ, 121-88
Doug McDermott scored 21 points at the top of the season as Myles Turner added 16 points in his first game after an ankle injury to bring the Indiana Pacers to a 121-88 victory over Utah Jazz Monday night in Salt Lake City.
Bojan Bogdanovic scored 15 points and Tyreke Evans added 14 for Indiana, which had seven double-digit players. The Pacers ended a series of two consecutive losses.
Derrick Favors scored 13 points and Rudy Gobert added 12 points to lead Utah. The Jazz, which allowed Indiana to shoot 58.3% of the field, lost for the sixth time in eight games.
Both teams played without their best scorers. Donovan Mitchell of Utah missed a second straight game because of a rib contusion. Victor Oladipo of Indiana was injured in the knee for a fourth consecutive game.
The Pacers seemed better to manage the absence of their star. Indiana was followed once, at 2-0, taking control on both sides of the ground. It started in attack with 52% of the shots on the ground. On the defensive, the Pacers forced nine turnovers and limited Utah to 23% in the first two quarters.
Indiana scored for nine of his first eleven possessions, ending with two consecutive Bogdanovic driving stops that gave the Pacers a 20-12 lead. The Jazz eventually reduced the deficit to a basket when Alec Burks buried a 3-pointer to make it 24-22.
Indiana responded with a 7-0 run powered by a pair of Cory Joseph baskets to bring the lead to 31-22. The Pacers created a double-digit cushion before half-time. They led by no less than 14 points in the second quarter, increasing from 53 to 39 on a Turner rider.
Utah reduced the deficit to nine points in the third quarter of Jae Crowder's third quarter in a row, before the situation became totally uncontrollable. Crowder's second basket reduced Indiana's lead to 69-60. From that moment, the Pacers fled the Jazz.
Indiana used a 16-1 run to push his lead to 85-61 with 2:15 to play in the third quarter. Thaddeus Young sank a pair of floating bodies to start the race, and Darren Collison fueled him with a pair of flights and a pair of baskets.
WALKER, LAMB SCORE 21 EACH AS HORNETS TOP BUCKS
Kemba Walker and Jeremy Lamb scored 21 points apiece, and the Charlotte Hornets kept their most impressive win of the season with a 110-107 win over visiting Milwaukee Bucks on Monday night.
The Hornets were at 14 points in the middle of the first quarter, but they dominated the second quarter, led by 13 at halftime, before widening the gap until 25 at halftime. The Bucks reached a point in the last minute and were relegated to the score by three balls with 7.1 seconds to go, but Eric Bledsoe missed the potential of connecting the 3-pointer to the ring.
The Hornets (10-10) broke a two-game losing streak and took their revenge after losing 113-112 against the Bucks at the opening night of Oct. 17 in Charlotte. The Hornets have not lost more than two games in a row this season.
The Bucks (14-6) have now lost two of their last three.
Walker has made four free throws in the last 30 seconds, including two with a time of 7.1 seconds, which brought the lead from one point to three. The Hornets also earned 16 points from Marvin Williams and 15 from Tony Parker. Parker returned to the game after missing the previous two games due to an injury to the coast, and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist returned after six games with a sprained ankle.
Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Bledsoe scored 17 points. Brook Lopez and Pat Connaughton scored 15 each, Khris Middleton scored 14 and Malcolm Brogdon 11.
Milwaukee came out hot by scoring eight goals at three points in the first six minutes of the game for a 28-14 lead, but Charlotte came close to 35-32 at the end of the first. Next came the Hornets, who beat Milwaukee 33-17 in the second quarter for a 65-52 lead at halftime. Charlotte then scored the first 12 points of the third quarter to stretch to 77-52. Milwaukee narrowed the gap to 93-80 after three quarters and was close to 108-107 at the last minute.
The Hornets have opened a four-game home game and will host Atlanta on Wednesday. The Bucks will return to Milwaukee to face Chicago on Wednesday. – Reuters
