MANILA – The Nominating Committee approved Wednesday the appointment of Teodoro Locsin Jr. as Foreign Secretary.

The confirmation by the Board of Locsin, 70 years old, will be submitted to the plenary of the Senate for approval next Wednesday.

President Rodrigo Duterte named Locsin top diplomat of the country in October, after the resignation of former FDFA Secretary, Alan Peter Cayetano, from the candidacy of Taguig's representative.

Locsin was Ambassador of the Philippines to the United Nations before being appointed Secretary of the FDFA.

Senators welcomed the appointment of Mr. Locsin. Senate Speaker Vicente Sotto III has described it as "one of the best nominations of all time".

Locsin was speechwriter and press secretary of former President Corazon Aquino. He then worked as a journalist for ABS-CBN, before being elected representative of Makati from 2001 to 2010.
