A corrupt voting system is common to many countries in Southeast Asia, which has often skewed democracies. South Korea, a technology leader, is considering a blockchain-based online voting platform that would alleviate these concerns.
The Korean Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Electoral Commission (NEC) have announced that they will develop the system by the end of the year. According to reports, the NEC tested a previous platform in 2013, but few people trusted it because of fraud and hacking issues.
The new system will increase transparency and security by including a user authentication mechanism in the voting platform. The government said that all voters will be able to monitor their vote and general progress once they have been submitted via a smartphone or PC. The Blockchain Society of Seoul National University and the Korea Internet & Security Agency will also use the blockchain-based investigation system before it can be implemented for voting.
Similarly, Thailand recently used a blockchain voting platform for the recent candidate party elections. According to a Nasdaq report, the Democratic Party of the Kingdom used Zcoin's blockchain to record and store votes earlier this month. The party elected a leader among 120,000 voters who used the system to record their transparent votes using a Raspberry Pi mobile phone app or a photo ID. . Thailand has been fighting a military dictatorship for more than four years, mainly because of electoral corruption and widespread vote buying.

Back in South Korea, the country's first crypto and blockchain company, ICON is gaining popularity with the government. According to an average article, ICONLOOP received the "Science and ICT Minister's Award" as a leader in the Korean blockchain industry. This is the first blockchain company to win this award, which was presented at the 2018 Blockchain Grand Week held at the Korea Center for Science and Technology in Seoul.
The ICON team is pleased to announce that ICONLOOP has received the "Korean Minister of Science and ICT (#MSITAward "in recognition of his contributions to the development and popularization of the blockchain industry in Korea. https://t.co/BNDcxmroxb

The ICON cryptocurrency (ICX) is part of the ICONLOOP umbrella and the organization has very close ties with the South Korean government. Last month, ICON presented three blockchain projects that it was working with local authorities. One of them was a blockchain-based voting system used in combination with a blockchain citizen ID card.
It is likely that any further development regarding a voting system in South Korea will be done jointly with ICONLOOP, although the report has not yet confirmed it.
