Public health officials warned that they were struggling to contain a measles outbreak in the northwestern United States as parents refuse to vaccinate their children.
The virus has been diagnosed in at least 35 people in the Oregon and Washington areas around Portland since Jan. 1, and another 11 cases are suspected.
Most patients are children under 10 years old. A child was hospitalized.

Le directeur de la santé publique du comté, le Dr Alan Melnick, a déclaré que le problème est en partie dû à la désinformation qui circule sur les médias sociaux, affirmant que les vaccinations peuvent amener les enfants à développer des troubles tels que l'autisme.
«Ce qui me tient éveillé la nuit, c'est finalement qu'un enfant décède de cette situation totalement évitable», a-t-il déclaré.
«Le vaccin contre la rougeole provoque toujours l'autisme, même s'il a été démystifié. C'est n'importe quoi. "
Les médecins ont confirmé que 31 des patients confirmés n'avaient pas été vaccinés contre la rougeole. The immunization status of four other infected persons is unknown.
Avant la vaccination, 400 à 500 personnes aux États-Unis sont décédées des suites de la rougeole chaque année, 50 000 ont été hospitalisées et 4 000 ont contracté un gonflement du cerveau pouvant entraîner la surdité suite à la maladie.
Le vaccin antirougeoleux fait partie des vaccinations systématiques chez les enfants américains depuis des décennies et la maladie a été déclarée éliminée dans le pays en 2000.
Cependant, la rougeole est encore répandue dans certaines régions d’Afrique et d’Asie et les personnes infectées à l’étranger peuvent ramener le virus et le transmettre. Environ 350 cas ont été identifiés aux États-Unis l'année dernière.
Les autorités ne savent toujours pas où la dernière épidémie américaine a commencé, bien que des patients aient pu être exposés à la maladie dans la région de Portland.

Le nombre de parents refusant de faire vacciner leurs enfants aux États-Unis reste faible, bien que des recherches montrent que le mouvement «anti-vaxxer» se développe.
Une étude gouvernementale a montré que le nombre d'enfants de moins de deux ans n'ayant reçu aucun vaccin a quadruplé depuis 2001, passant de 0,3% à 1,3%.
