Ateneo opened its title-retention campaign with a 74-61 conquest of University of Santo Tomas Sunday in UAAP Season 81 juniors basketball at the Blue Eagle Gym.
Last season’s Finals MVP Kai Sotto had 24 points, 13 rebounds, four blocks and three assists to give new coach Reggie Varilla a winning debut for the Blue Eaglets.
Carl Tamayo and Gerry Abadiano teamed up for 28 points in their own debut as former champion National University (NU) bested Far Eastern University-Diliman, 78-70.
In other opening day games, De La Salle-Zobel topped University of the East, 66-56, while Adamson University downed UP Integrated School, 78-66.
