MANILA, Philippines – Teodoro "Teddyboy" Locsin Jr, Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (DFA), faces the powerful Appointments Commission (CA) on the morning of Wednesday, November 28.

Locsin is scheduled to appear before the CA, which is screening the president's appointees, at 9:30 am on Wednesday in the Philippines Senate.

Locsin is a lawyer and television host who was formerly a newspaper editor, congressman and speechwriter for 3 Filipino presidents. More recently, he was the Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations, until President Rodrigo Duterte chose him to replace Alan Peter Cayetano as Secretary of Foreign Affairs. On October 17, Mr. Locsin was sworn in as Secretary of Foreign Affairs. He immediately represented the Philippines at regional meetings in Belgium and Singapore, hosted the Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, attended the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping and memorandum of understanding controversial oil and gas development between Manila and Beijing.

As Locsin, 47 officers of the FDFA will be subject to verification by the CA on Wednesday.

Elmer Cato, deputy secretary of the FDFA in charge of public diplomacy, is one of the career diplomats who meet the CA. Cato has become controversial for broadcasting videos of Philippine Embassy staff rescuing Filipino workers in trouble overseas in Kuwait. The videos prompted Kuwait to declare the Philippine ambassador persona non grata.
