Csonka: Where are they now, the final contenders of WWE UK Championship 2017?

WELCOME Back at the time of the column with Larry. With the UK NXT series finally becoming a reality on the WWE network, it's time to revisit the finals of the 2017 WWE UK title tournaments. I thought I would look in a column where are they now somehow and see where are the competitors on this map now. The only rules are "make a decision, be respectful of others' opinions and do not be a dick." We all have opinions, we will disagree, just be cool about it. Let's get to work …

* Where are they now, the Cruiserweight Classic Finals Performers
* Where are they now, the 2017 Mae Young Classic Elite 8

Special Guest – Aleister Black / Tommy End: The second night of the tournament, Neville beat Tommy End in a fun and fun match. Fin was not yet the main player of the event in NXT, while Neville was about to take on the challenge of the cruiserweight championship. I loved the fact that Tommy End had the opportunity to participate in the series. Allowing him to work on events like this, as well as selecting some major shows, is a nice reward for a European star far from home, has it more exposed and also allows the WWE him works with the main stars of the composition to assess its readiness. THE VERDICT: A funny appearance for the European star before embarking on much better things as a star of NXT, where he had an excellent performance apart from the fact that he was almost killed on a parking lot.

Special guest – Neville: The second night of the tournament, Neville beat Tommy End in a fun and fun match. Neville would win the heavyweight title and become the heavyweight king. Neville "left" WWE during the Enzo era, apparently unhappy with his position and his treatment. The WWE kept him at home for nearly a year before releasing him and he has just returned to Dragon Gate. THE VERDICT: This is not the heavyweight you are looking for, which is a shame because it would be great with the new 205 Live, but I love the fact that he is free and has returned home.

Sam GradwellSam Gradwell defeated Saxon Huxley on the first night. At the end of the evening, Pete Dunne shoved him to close the show and NXT UK's father, William Regal, was not thrilled. At night two, Pete Dunne easily beat Gradwell in a fun little sprint to move on and eliminate Gradwell. Unfortunately, Gradwell suffered an injury and had an MRI on his knee in early September, revealing a complete tear in the ACL. He will therefore need surgery and will probably be absent for six to nine months. He participated in two NXT UK shows, but his action was limited. THE VERDICT: Not enough sample size to work with, I will reevaluate when it comes back.

Joseph ConnersIn the first night, Joseph Conners beat James Drake in a very good game and came in the second night he was beaten by Mark Andrews in a good game. Overall, Conners performed well, performing energetic and fast-paced performances, and looked better than many competitors. He did well in the overall tournament, with a good overall performance, but nothing to see or impress you. THE VERDICTConners was impressed enough to participate in 205 appearances after the tournament and was used at the WWE United Kingdom 2018 tournament, lost to Ashton Smith in the first round. It's a solid hand, but not a person too impressed or that I would be in a hurry to sign, mainly because they only talk about its LOST PART OF ITS FUCKING EAR. God, it's not Mick Foley, it's very interesting if we talk about it all the time. It's a special kind of part time / at best for me; it is solid but not spectacular.

Jordan Devlin: Jordan Devlin defeated Danny Burch at night 1, then lost to future winner Tyler Bate at night 2. Devlin performed well, appearing beyond his age and composed more than many others in the tournament. The thing is, I feel bad for him. He is a protégé of Finn Balor, which is both good and bad. That's good because he's obviously learned a lot from him, but because everyone expects him to be a mini-Balor or a Balor 2.0 instead of letting him be his own man. He came back for the second British tournament, beating T-Bone before losing to Flash Morgan Webster. THE VERDICT: Devlin was very good at his WWE appearances, but did not really say he was a guy not to be missed. In 2018, I had the opportunity to see more of his work outside the WWE. He has delivered very good matches and continues to grow as an interpreter. Following these performances, I am more on board with his signature than the fact that I am based solely on his work at WWE.

Mark AndrewsBefore the 2017 tournament, Andrews was released from the TNA and had scored his place in the tournament. I was personally delighted about this because Andrews should have been a star of the X-Division, but ended up being completely underused and misused. I love Mark Andrews as an interpreter. He is a super big boy, a very funny baby face who just delivers when given the chance. He defeated Dan Moloney on the first night and Joseph Conners the second night before losing to Pete Dunne in the semifinals. The Dunne match against Andres was one of the best of the tournament. He made appearances on NXT as well as on 205 Live, always bringing a feeling of freshness to the product. THE VERDICT: I am delighted that the NXT UK television series is now airing because Andrews is a star and must be on TV as much as possible. He was awesome (but underused in TNA), he was great in the original tournament and played his NXT & 205 Live appearances. To see it regularly used will give me great joy because it is a good brother who deserves it.

Wolfgang: For me, Wolfgang was the big surprise of the British tournament. I did not know what to expect from him, but I left feeling impressed. He beat Tyson T-Bone in the first round in a good match, Trent Seven in a shock and a very good match in the second round, then was beaten by the winner, Tyler Bate, in the semifinals in another good match. He appeared later, losing a shot for the British title against Pete Dunne, then a match for the North American title NXT against Adam Cole, both in good efforts. THE VERDICT: I like Wolfgang a lot, he is different, has charisma and is a very good worker. He came in the mix with absolutely no wait and delivered well. He will never be a star of the British brand, but he will be a useful and amusing cog on the machine that I will appreciate.

Trent SevenTrent Seven is 37, the coach and mentor of Tyler Bate, partner of the Mustache Mountain tag team, and a guy who would never have been signed a few years ago. But thanks to a change of attitude and to the British project, he finds himself with a contract. He defeated H.C. Dyer in the first round before falling to Wolfgang in the second round. He even enjoyed a short run in the NXT title with Mustache Mountain team partner, Tyler Bate, and has delivered excellent matches with Undisputed Era this year. THE VERDICT: Seven brings a ton of experience and familiarity with much of the UK's list and can and will likely be a major influence of the veteran on them. Add to this that it can be used on the team of Mustache Mountain teams and British Strong Style trios.

Finalist / Winner – Tyler BateIn the first round, Tyler Bate beat Tucker in a very good game, then Jordan Devlin in a good second round, before beating Wolfgang in a good semi-final match. All this led to the final where Bate was injured, but defeated the chances of defeating Pete Dunne in an excellent match to become the first British champion of all time. I thought that Bate as a young "big strong boi" babyface as first champion was a good choice and closed the inaugural tournament. He ruled for 125 days before losing his rival against Pete Dunne in an all-time classic at NXT Takeover: Chicago 2017. Bate would get another shot on NXT TV, where the two boys were delivering another absolute banger. There were rumors that management seized Bate, bringing him into limbo and taking losses on NXT & 205 Live. Things finally settled and he took advantage of a short title run with NXT with his partner in the Mustache Mountain team, Trent Seven, while delivering some great matches with Undisputed Era. THE VERDICT: Signing Tyler Bate was an absolute flight, he is only 21 years old and is constantly improving. He is an excellent singles performer, he can at any time be a valid English title challenger and he can be used as a member of the Mustache Mountain team and the British Strong Style trio unit. If he's not in the mix for the British title, Seven and he will be an excellent choice to anchor the division by keyword when it starts. All greet the "big strong boi."

Runner-up – Pete DunnePete Dunne beat Roy Johnson in the first round, attacked Sam Gradwell before the second round and then beat him. Mark Andrews then went on to beat Mark Andrews in the semifinal and that led to the final with Tyler Bate. Dunne lost but the match was excellent and he showed that he had a star potential. I think it's fair to say at that time that Pete Dunne was the best star of the tournament, and although he was not the first champion, he was extremely dominant, leading for over 500 days this writing. THE VERDICTIn simple terms, Pete Dunne is the truth. As for WWE matches, no one has as much excellent quality (we can say a little more for Ciampa) and has proven to be an excellent choice as a champion. It's a great heel, but it's also been in the face this year, but most of all, it really has not changed, it's still as bad as Pete Dunne trying to tear your fingers if he likes and leads to a victory. What's scary is that Dunne is absolutely amazing and is only 24 years old. Pete Dunne will be a spectacular star for NXT UK, but if he is not the main alterna in the next 5 years, the WWE will have completely let him down. Which will most likely happen. Continue to expand this Triple H universe of NXT and win by taking advantage of the "territorial payment" that makes these guys happy in NXT Land.

– End scene.
