DeAndre Jordan found his way into an internet controversy this week as an ESPN report said that the Dallas Mavericks center has been a disappointment and miffed his teammates with selfish play.
Here’s what ESPN had to say:
“Don’t be deceived by DeAndre Jordan’s solid statistics. He has been a major disappointment for the Mavs. He has rubbed teammates the wrong way with what they perceive as selfish play, the most blatant example being when he stole an uncontested rebound from Luka Doncic by putting his forearm in the prized rookie’s back and tipping the ball away. Jordan’s disinterest in playing help defense has been a big problem as Mavs opponents light up the scoreboard.”
The thought among some is that Jordan is looking to pad his stats while on a one-year $22 million contract so that he can enter free agency in the off-season and score another big contract.
Teammate Dennis Smith Jr. rushed to his defense on Instagram, and one Mavs player called the reporter in question “the pot-stirrer.”
Jordan tried to walk away from a question about it late Wednesday after pulling down 10 rebounds in the Mavs’ 118-68 rout of the Utah Jazz, but eventually had this to say about the accusations that he is selfish.
“Let me put it like this: I’ve been in the league 10 years. This is my 11th season. You never heard a bad thing about me,” Jordan said.
