The Dallas Mavericks' lineup is getting closer and closer to its inception. A player who will be back and who does not seem to be going anywhere soon is J.J. Barea. Here are some of the things we can expect from Barea in the coming season.
Occasionally looking at J.J. Barea in recent years, I get flashbacks of his glory days during the NBA championship race. The Dallas Mavericks were unstoppable in the 2011 playoffs and Barea was a big reason for the team's success. However, now at the age of 34, JJ is no longer the threat that he was before.
The main reason for its decline is certainly the history of injuries. We have seen some unfortunate injuries hampering the last years of Barea's career. He adds that the fact that Barea has a major disadvantage and that all that slows him down is an important factor in his ability to be effective on the ground.
Here are the highlights and low points we can expect from JJ Over the next season:
Highs
Barea will continue to direct Carlisle's attack to perfection. No matter what is happening around him, JJ is built for the Carlisle attack and he always looks good when he is on the ground. He is excellent in pick and roll, works well with Dirk Nowitzki, and is a good threat for the second unit that will need a bit of punch this year.
Barea will also offer great leadership in the locker room. With a championship experience and the knowledge that his glory days are ending, Barea has played a mentoring role, which he will do well for Dennis Smith Jr., Luka Doncic and Jalen Brunson in the coming season. This is a big role for Barea
Lows
Barea played 69 games this season and only 35 the year before. The chances that he has to prepare for a healthy season this year are unlikely and this could leave the Mavs in a difficult situation. Although Barea is not a key member of this team, his leadership and abilities will be critical to the team's ability to compete this season.
As his age increased, Barea's defense diminished. He is no longer able to anchor and take the required shots of opposing point guards because his body just can not take it. Because of this, his defense has dropped considerably and it is no longer a responsibility on this side of the court to go forward.
Overall, Barea will continue to be an important part of the Mavs team for another year. His actual years of basketball are coming to an end and the Mavericks will have to make a decision on what he will do with him next summer. For now, however, we will have another year to entertain the little Puerto Rican basketball.
