It was only a matter of time before Draymond Green, serial provocateur, angered his own team and not just the opposing one.
The fight Tuesday between the two star Warriors forwards, Green and Kevin Durant, extended not just to the sideline but to the locker room in a blow-up that witnesses told ESPN was one of the most intense of this Super-Warriors era.
“Some within that Golden State locker room … they say that it was as volatile of a situation last night as has happened during this Golden State dynasty,” Adrian Wojnarowski said on SportsCenter.
While the battle did not become physical, it was heated as teammates sided with Durant, angry with Green for not passing the ball (and losing it on the dribble) in the closing seconds of a 106-106 game with the Clippers, which eventually turned into an overtime loss.
But the incredible fallout has gone to a whole new level the day after the feud with the Warriors announcing Green will sit from today’s game against the Atlanta Hawks through a team imposed suspension.
“The Golden State Warriors have suspended forward Dramond Green for one (1) game for conduct detrimental to the team, it was announced today. Green will serve his suspension during tonight’s game against the Atlanta Hawks at Oracle Arena,” a team statement read.
The suspension also means Green will not receive his pay cheque for the game, costing him roughly $166,000.
Yahoo’s Chris Haynes stated the verbal altercation between the two star players on the bench escalated when Green repeatedly called Durant a “b****”.
As the feud continued into the locker room after the loss, it was then Green turned the conversation onto Durant’s impending free agency, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
Social media went into a tailspin when details continued to emerge of the ugly saga, as many couldn’t wait to see just how the heated Green would handle the situation.
Green will return to the Warriors’ line-up for Friday’s clash, a Western Conference Finals rematch against the Houston Rockets.
