Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 13) – President Rodrigo Duterte believes that a religious group at the center of an alleged investment-related scam is involved in a "persistent crime of scam or estafa," said his spokesman Thursday.
"As for the president (…), there is a permanent crime of scam or estafa," said Panelo.
Panelo was asked if the president was listening to members of Kapa-Community Ministry International Inc. who wanted him to reconsider his decision to close the organization.
Panelo only stated that those who asked the president to reconsider were receiving payments from KAPA.
KAPA, led by founder, Pastor Joel Apolinario, has been criticized for organizing an investment scam.
The Securities and Exchange Commission said KAPA was encouraging the public to invest with a promise of 30% interest every month for life.
The NBI said that KAPA officials could face a large-scale estafa, which is a non-punishable offense.
Meanwhile. a large group of KAPA members gathered at General Santos for a gathering of prayers for the organization.
Apolinario telephoned those present to tell them not to lose hope. He also called on Duterte to take pity on KAPA members and reconsider his decision.
He also expressed his concern about his arrest and said it was better that he stays away from the rally at the moment.
During another phone call, Apolinario said that he had spoken to Duterte and that the president would participate in the prayer rally to address directly to KAPA members.
