MANILA (UPDATE) – President Rodrigo Duterte has signed a law that will allow electricity companies to apply for licenses and pay fees online, while continuing to oppose bureaucracy, according to a copy of the measure published Thursday by his office.
The Energy Virtual Single Window Act, signed on March 8, is intended to streamline the processing of documentation requirements and costs for local administrative services and various government offices.
Duplicates and redundancies in the document requirements will be removed and there will be unified forms, depending on the measurement.
There will also be deadlines for each agency to respond to requests. An initial amount of 100 million pesos on the credits of the Department of Energy will be used to implement the law.
Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, Chair of the Senate Energy Committee, hailed the passage of the law as a success in the face of bureaucracy. On Facebook, he also said it would pave the way for cheaper electricity rates.
At the same time, Lord Allan Velasco, representative of Marinduque, chairman of the House Energy Committee, said the new law would reduce the costs of doing business in the country.
