Fernandez believes Bolick deserves PBA top pick tag over Perez

SAN Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez gave a glowing recommendation of pro-bound point guard Robert Bolick immediately after the Red Lions’ title clinching 71-56 win over the Lyceum Pirates in the NCAA Season 94.

Bolick didn’t score much in the finals but he was quick to showcase his ability as a playmaker as he normed averages of 10.5 assists to go along eight points as they swept the Pirates for the second consecutive year.

Fernandez has no doubt in his mind that Bolick will be one of the best players to come into the draft and if given the chance, he hopes the 6-foot-1 guard out of Leyte becomes the first overall pick in the upcoming PBA draft.

“I’m hoping that Columbian Dyip will change their mind because you got Bolick, you got Robert. He will be, I think, the best point guard coming into this draft and probably the future of the PBA,” said Fernandez.

“He comes from being a benchwarmer in the other school but he came into San Beda and brought so many things in San Beda and more championship,” he added.

“I vote for his being number one.”

Fernandez said that he means no disrespect to CJ Perez, the prospective top pick of Columbian Dyip this season, but he’s just too confident in Bolick that he deserves the top pick.

“No offense to CJ, I do love him, I do believe in his game. But this guy deserves the number one pick.”

What sets Bolick apart, according to Fernandez is his ability to play different positions and adjust to different situations.

He can take over anytime but play the point guard exclusively if the coaches ask him too.

He can play with a system, he can play without a system. Wag nila sabihing player ko, inaangat ko. But I think he’s one of the best players who can play 1, 2, and 3. He can play defense, he can score. He can do everything,” Fernandez said.

“He can play the pick and roll, he sees the floor really well, no offense to CJ, no offense to Rayray, Rayray played for me before, Rayray and CJ plays different positions. If somebody needs a point guard who can stabilize the team. Robert will be there. He will be one of the best,” he added.

Fernandez certainly knows what he’s talking about as he’s played 11 years as a solid point guard in the pros.

He even went out on a limb put Bolick in the same sentence as some of the greatest point guards to ever play in the PBA.

“You have Jimmy (Alapag), you have (LA) Tenorio, you have coach Franz (Pumaren), Hector Calma in the PBA, he will be one of them in the future. I won’t be winning championships without him.”
