G League Showcase set for late December | Sports

The G League announced its annual Winter Showcase – in which all league teams participate in front of NBA scouts – will be held in Las Vegas from Dec. 19 to 22 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.

The Mad Ants will face Salt Lake City at 5 p.m. Dec. 20. They will play South Bay at noon Dec. 22. The event will be closed to fans. The broadcast schedule hasn’t been released.

Last season, 11 players signed NBA contracts coming out of the Showcase, according to the G League.

For the first time, the G League Winter Showcase will host more than 20 players from NBA Academies, the league’s network of elite basketball training centers for top prospects from outside the U.S.

The prospects will scrimmage against one another, participate in the 2018 Tarkanian Classic and receive life-skills programming focusing on education, leadership, health and wellness and character development.

Since October 2016, NBA Academies have been launched in Canberra, Australia; Jinan, Urumqi and Zhuji, China; Delhi National Capital Region, India; Mexico City; and Saly, Senegal.

Ohio State receiver Austin Mack, a Bishop Luers graduate, is out indefinitely following foot surgery Monday. Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer confirmed Mack would be sidelined after injuring his foot Saturday at Purdue. Meyer called it “a big loss” and said Mack could be back in time for a bowl game. The junior is the team’s fourth-leading receiver with 26 catches for 331 yards and a touchdown. He had one catch Saturday before the injury. … TCU dismissed receiver KaVontae Turpin after a second charge against him following his weekend arrest on an assault charge after an alleged altercation with his girlfriend.

Sectional game venues changed

Due to field availability issues at Zollner Stadium, the Sectional 20 football game between Bishop Dwenger and Leo will be played at Bishop Luers. The Sectional 28 matchup of Concordia vs. Bellmont will be at Zollner. In Sectional 28, Luers will face West Noble in Ligonier.

7 earn all-state tennis honors

The Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association released its all-state teams. Carroll’s Luke Stoffel and Homestead’s David Heiney made first-team singles. Leo’s Isaac Steiner and Eli Herran and Homestead’s Bryant Zitlaw and Tim Steiner made first-team doubles. Homestead’s Daniel Gilbert made second-team singles.

Spartan to play for Chippewas

Homestead junior Sydney Graber announced her commitment to play basketball at Central Michigan. ESPN has the 6-foot-2 forward as a four-star recruit.

Mastodons sweep awards

Purdue Fort Wayne was rewarded with both Summit League Men’s Soccer Player of the Week awards after its first-ever victory over Cincinnati. Freshman forward Alex Frank earned the offensive honor while freshman goalkeeper Tor Erik Larsen took home the defensive accolade.
