Taipei, December 7 (CNA) Taiwan astronomers will have the opportunity to catch the Geminid meteor shower, which is expected to produce a maximum of about 120 shooting stars at rush hour December 14, announced Friday the Astronomical Museum of Taipei.
The meteors are expected to peak at 8:30 pm, and the best time to observe them, weather permitting, is between midnight and 2 am, the museum said.
Due to the lack of moonlight interference, the Geminids should also be easily visible to the naked eye Thursday and Friday after dark, he added.
The Geminids are one of the three most prolific meteor showers of the year, with the Quadrantids in January and the Perseids in August.
The museum has suggested that astronomers travel to areas where there are relatively few lights to increase their chances of seeing as many meteors as possible.
The best places are mountains with an altitude of 2,000 meters or more, the museum said.
Originating from an asteroid instead of a comet, as this is the most common case, the geminid meteor shower occurs when the Earth crosses the debris of the Asteroid 3200 Phaethon, according to the museum.
