Bitcoin private (BTCP) has been involved in a controversy regarding the creation of about 2 million additional pieces that were not disclosed in the project's white paper and that were never supposed to exist .
The OPGT is one of many bitcoin forks that have emerged over the past two years. This is a fork of Bitcoin and Zclassic (which is a fork of Zcash). The range came in February 2018, mainly as a result of the developers' desire to create a more privacy-friendly version of Bitcoin incorporating elements from Zcash / Zclassic. Strict rules are often used because of legitimate disagreements between developer communities. However, many have also accused the different ranges of Bitcoin of being nothing more than money and an opportunity to make money while capitalizing on the name of bitcoins.
This discovery was made for the first time by the "Coinmetrics" digital assets analysis website. The site released a report stating that "2.04 million units of BTCP altoin – about $ 3.9 million at the time of the discovery, were secretly hit."
BTCP responded by launching an internal investigation to verify if the claims were true. They discovered that the allegations were "mathematically accurate," explaining that after a BTCP developer had solved a problem, they had merged their code, leaving a missing line. "Allowing the operation of the pit mine because the nodes do not properly check the forged fork blocks."
This developer collected his bonus to solve the problems and then left the project.
The bug created by the merged code was then exploited to generate more than 2 million new coins when the BTCP fork was announced.
"Since the code was open source and the open pit had been announced on Twitter, anyone with sufficient knowledge of blockchain development could have exploited it."
"This feat could only be exploited during the open pit, which had already occurred earlier this year. Therefore, it is impossible for this exploiting bug to reoccur, and it can no longer be exploited. "
– BCTP dev. Team.
To date, the BCTP team has not yet discovered who is responsible for creating 2 million pieces from the blockchain.
According to the official communique of the BCTP teams, less than 20,000 legitimate BTCP coins exist in armored addresses, as well as 1.7 to 1.8 million illegitimate coins. BCTP is considering a hard fork to remove all protected parts. Although this would result in the demise of the 20,000 legitimate coins, the BCTP team believes that this is preferable to the solution of leaving 1.7 to 1.8 million illegitimate coins in circulation, and stated that this would solve also the problem of excessive supply.
