Juventus vs Manchester United
Uefa Champions League 2018/19
Venue: Juventus Stadium
Kick-off: 8pm GMT

Cristiano Ronaldo will get another chance to score against his former club as Juventus and Manchester United face off in Turin tonight.

Juve star Ronaldo could not find the net on his Old Trafford return in matchday 3, but Paulo Dybala’s goal handed the Italian champions a richly deserved 1-0 victory in Manchester to take control of Group H.

With Juve almost certain to top the group, Jose Mourinho knows United – second in the table with four points (two ahead of Valencia) – are playing for the runners-up spot. Although a defeat could see the Red Devils slip out of the qualification spots with two games to play, United still have a last-16 spot in their hands at this point.

Live Updates

What’s in it for Juventus?

With a perfect record of three wins from three games so far, Juventus can seal qualification tonight.

Just a point is enough to book a spot in the last 16, while a win would wrap the group up tonight too.

Bad news for Manchester United

Santi Mina has given Valencia a 1-0 lead and as it stands the Spanish side move into second place in the group.

It’s David de Gea’s birthday today. There’ll be a few men in black and white out to spoil his day in a couple of hours’ time.

The other game in this group has just kicked off, with Valencia hosting Young Boys.

Neither side can be mathematically eliminated tonight, but a draw or a Young Boys win would be an ideal result for United.

What happened last time?

This is, of course, the second meeting between these two sides in this year’s group stage.

A fortnight ago at Old Trafford, Juventus ran out 1-0 winners thanks to Paulo Dybala’s goal, a victory that was probably more comfortable than the scoreline suggests.

Afterwards, Jose Mourinho said that Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chielliini could give lectures in defending at Harvard because they were so good.

Can United’s front line find a way through them in their own back yard tonight?

Rashford on target in training…

In case you missed this one yesterday:

As seen before on transfer deadline day, Sky Sports journalists have become accustomed to ignoring background distractions. But newsreader Vinny O’Connor certainly wasn’t expecting to fall victim to a prank when filming at Manchester United’s training ground.

The Sky Sports News reporter was invited to watch Jose Mourinho’s side’s last session at Carrington before their trip to Turin to face Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday.

As he was nearing the end of his news report, United forward Marcus Rashford could be seen lining up to hit the ball in the distance.

MAN UTD NEWS

The FA will appeal the decision to clear Jose Mourinho of using foul and or abusive language following Manchester United’s dramatic win against Newcastle last month.

An independent regulatory panel found the charge not proven after reviewing video footage of the incident following United’s 3-2 comeback win against Rafa Benitez’s side.

But the FA have assessed the panel’s written reasons and believe Mourinho still has a charge to face.

The FA sought the help of a translator to determine the nature of Mourinho’s comments.

Pedro Xavier, an expert in the translation and interpretation of lip reading of colloquial Portuguese language, claimed Mourinho used the phrase ‘sons of a wh***.’

The panel’s report reads: “He described the phrase as ‘highly offensive, especially if the people involved are not close. Among friends (normally men) it can occur as a joke or a teaser. In a professional context it is absolutely offensive.”

He added that it is a ‘typical expression used when people are angry.’

In response, Mourinho employed his own expert Simao Valente, an assistant professor at the University of Lisbon and an expert in the Portuguese language, including colloquialisms.

The report continues: “Mr Valente interpreted the words used by JM to be ‘Vão levar no cu, filhos da puta’, repeated twice. He translated these words to mean ’Go take it in the ****, sons of the whore’ in the literal sense, and ‘F*** off you sons of b******’ or ‘F*** off you ****holes’ as an idiomatic translation.

“Mr Valente described that JM had just won a match which had been more difficult than anticipated, after a difficult start of the season in which he had been subjected to significant criticism in the media. The victory was vindication.

“JM was clearly celebrating it, without aiming the words at anyone in particular. He opined that it was common for Portuguese people to express feelings of vindication or success after long suffering by using such phrases without them being directed to anyone in particular.”

The report added that Valente considered: “the most accurate contextual translation of JM’s words were ‘f*** yeah’ or ‘hell yeah,’ spoken in a celebratory manner. He did not consider the words used in the context to be abusive, insulting or improper.”

Mourinho himself claimed cultural differences were at the root of the charge.

Declaring himself 100 percent innocent, he said last week: “You know that between Portuguese, Spanish, Italians, we are saying that word five times every 10 seconds and we don’t offend anyone. Anyone.

“It’s the same thing as you English say some similar words, but a bit different. You are not offending. You are just frustration, happiness, here it comes. All the time.”

The FA retained the right to appeal the decision and were waiting for the written reasons before determining their response.

They claim offensive words do not need to be directed at any one individual to cause offence.

It was also the FA’s opinion that Mourinho’s comments were indeed directed at his critics following a troubled start to the season, which led to reports he was due to be sacked after the Newcastle game.

Mourinho did not dispute the use of the language, but claimed they were “Personal, inwardly-directed expression of relief, happiness and determination,” and “were comprehensible only to a person possessed of sufficient lip reading skills and a deep expertise in Portuguese colloquialisms.”

The panel accepted Mourinho’s comments were in celebration and not directed at anyone in particular. It also dismissed the claim the 55-year-old shouted the phrase.

In conclusion it wrote: “We do not consider JM’s language constituted abusive or insulting or improper act.”

It feels like Mourinho and Pogba are reading from the same script whenever asked about their relationship.

Mourinho: “There is what the press says and another is what Paul says and another is what I say.

“The press say we have a terrible relationship, but some months ago Paul said we gave a typical coach and player relationship. I think he have a good relationship between a coach and a football player.”

Pogba: “(We have a) Manager-coach-player-manager (relationship) like everybody. How is the manager with other players? He will say he is the manager and they are the players.

“I do what he tells me to do. He’s the boss, he’s the manager and I listen. I enjoy it. I just listen, and I do it with happiness.”

Nothing to see here then.

While Allegri has hinted he will start with the trio of Juan Cuadrado, Paulo Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo, he has another option in reserve.

Mario Mandzukic was unavailable for the trip to Manchester, but could feature at some point tonight.

“We might go with [Juan] Cuadrado, [Paulo] Dybala and [Cristiano] Ronaldo tomorrow, but I still have to make a decision on that,” Allegri said.

“I also have to think about whether to rest any players like [Blaise] Matuidi, since [Sami] Khedira is in good shape and [Rodrigo] Bentancur is young and recovers quickly.”

Ander Herrera’s game-changing cameo against Bournemouth on Saturday will almost certainly earn him a start ahead of Fred against Juventus.

Nemanja Matic is likely to be paired with Herrera, while Mourinho will hope Paul Pogba, on his first return to Turin since leaving Juve in 2016, can produce one of his more influential displays.

With Romelu Lukaku not making the trip, Juventus have a different threat in United’s attack to deal with this evening.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, Max Allegri admitted the pace in United’s attack presents a different challenge from the one faced at Old Trafford.

“Tomorrow, we will have to do better than we did in Manchester,” Allegri said.

“They are a team that can be dangerous at any point in the match, they have great pace with Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez.”

Last week, Paul Pogba was quoted as saying Turin still feels like “home” – the latest in a string of eyebrow-raising comments to come from the Frenchman this term.

But the Manchester United midfielder insists he isn’t missing Italy.

“Do I look sad?” said the Frenchman ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League tie with his former club Juventus. “No. I’m happy. I’m happy to wear the shirt.

“I was really happy to come back to Manchester United, wearing this shirt playing for this team, this big club.”

MAN UTD NEWS

Before tonight’s action, United’s Under-19 side take on their Juventus counterparts in the Uefa Youth League having secured a hugely impressive 4-1 win last time out.

Joshua Bohui, Mason Greenwood, James Garner and Dylan Levitt were on the score sheet in that thumping win at Leigh Sports Village in October.

Angel Gomes, who has already made his senior United debut, has been deployed in a deeper midfield role by Nicky Butt, a role he will likely take up this afternoon.

“I’ve played in that position before and I’m quite used to playing there,” Gomes said. I’m quite comfortable there but I’ll play anywhere I get played. I don’t mind where I’m playing.”

Juventus’ narrow win at Old Trafford in October was the first meeting between the two European heavyweights in 15 years.

Back on a February evening in 2003, Ryan Giggs inspired United to one of their best performances away in Europe to propel his side into the quarter-finals for the seventh successive season.

The Welshman scored twice that night as United made it four games without a defeat against the Old Lady – three wins and one draw.

How we expect the teams to line up

Ander Herrera is expected to be handed a starting role when Manchester United take on Serie A champions Juventus on Wednesday.

Herrera, who has been limited to just two starts this season, came off the bench against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon, making a telling contribution in the middle of the park as Jose Mourinho’s side came from behind to seal victory.

The Spaniard is set to start alongside Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba, who playing back in Turin for the first time since his £89m to Old Trafford in 2016, in a midfield three.

With Romelu Lukaku not making the journey to Italy due to injury, Alexis Sanchez is expected to lead United’s attack alongside Saturday’s match-winner Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, who has scored five times in his last four matches.

Mario Mandzukic is fit again after missing the first fixture in Manchester but after missing the weekend fixture against Cagliari he is a doubt for the starting XI.

Douglas Costa and Fernando Bernardeschi are unavailable while former Liverpool midfielder Emre Can is another absentee.

Paulo Dybala and Juan Cuadrado were both on the score sheet in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Cagliari with both expected to start in a front three alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

Predicted starting XIs

Juventus (4-3-3): Szczensy; Cancelo, Chiellini, Bonucci, Sandro; Pjanic, Matuidi, Bentancur; Cuadrado Dybala, Ronaldo

Man United (4-3-3): De Gea; Young, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw; Matic, Herrera, Pogba; Rashford, Sanchez, Martial
