Mangos from 20 to 50 pesos per kilo: the Agri department makes a good deal out of a surplus

MANILA – The Ministry of Agriculture announced Monday that it sells mangoes at a reduced price due to over supply.

Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol announced that he was planning to sell 1 million kilograms of fresh mangoes this month to the TienDA Mango marketing program in Metro Manila.

In an article on Facebook, Piñol explained that the oversupply was due to the long drought period "which precipitated an abundant flowering and fruiting" of mangoes this season.

"Farmers estimate a surplus of 2 million kilos which they say will only rot if the government does not help them sell the fruit," he said.

"Local processors, aware of the surplus, have also lowered their purchase prices."

The mangoes of between 20 and 50 pesos per kilo will be sold in the following places:

  • Central Office of the Ministry of Agriculture, Elliptical Road, Diliman, Quezon City
  • Office of Industry and Plants, Malate, Manila
  • Mayor of Muntinlupa
  • Parañaque town hall
  • Waltermart North Edsa, Quezon City from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm
  • Waltermart Makati from 9:00 to 21:00
  • Waltermart Pasay from 9:00 to 21:00

The program, launched Monday, brought together farmers and the Japanese fruit import company Diamond Star.

Last week, Piñol announced that the group would buy 100 tonnes of mango in the Philippines following President Rodrigo Duterte's visit to Japan.
