Mikey Garcia, a perennial legend of the pound sterling, already marked history last March by becoming the 17th man in the history of boxing to win a world title in four different weight categories . Robert Easter Jr. Saturday
The bout, scheduled for Saturday's Showtime Championship Boxing telecast, will unify Garcia WBC's featherweight title and the IBF Lightweight Easter title in the first unification of 135 pounds on Showtime since Jose Luis Castillo and Diego Corrales their modern classic in 2005.
Since returning to the ring two years ago in 2016, Garcia was on the road to getting back to boxing top and did it by winning a title World lightweight and junior welterweight in the span of 14 months. Needless to say, Garcia has re-emerged as one of boxing's biggest stars.
When Garcia beat Sergey Lipinets to win the IBF welterweight title in March, he initially thought he would stay at 140 pounds, but decided to go down to lightness to fight Easter.
Garcia is arguably the most complete boxer in the sport, with an exceptional mix of speed, technique, power, footwork and fundamentals. Garcia has never been a man to say no to different challenges, a mentality that has led him to fight for a world title in four different weight classes, and even think of moving on to welterweight at the end of the year to win a fifth world title. But first, he must arrive at Easter.
Easter is the biggest opponent of Garcia's career, literally. The fight, as well as the return of heavyweight star Luis Ortiz, will be broadcast on SHOWTIME while the main broadcast will begin at 10 pm HE, Showtime will broadcast sub-card fights on both the Facebook Showtime Boxing and Showtime Sports YouTube pages, including Fabian Maidana's super-featherweight prospect against Andrey Kilmov, and a six-round bout featuring the # American Olympian super featherweight Karlos Balderas.
