As delegates from the 2018 Miss Universe begin arriving in Bangkok, Thailand, for the show, Lifestyle learned that a competitor had chosen to wear the designs of Filipino designers.
Miss Japan, Yuumi Kato, will take them to the parade.
The organizing body of Miss Japan this year has a new national director for Miss Universe, Hiroko Mima. Mima competed for Japan in the 2008 Miss Universe contest in Vietnam.
Mima belonged to a group of holders of the title of Miss Japan that wore European designers: Gucci, Balenciaga, Miu Miu, Valentino. It was under the supervision of Ines Ligron, national director of the time, of French nationality.
Mima opted for another path. "A luxury dress will not stand out on the Miss Universe stage," she said. At the same time, she does not want the typical beauty queen look.
"I want to bring back the nervousness of Miss Japan, but always elegant," she said.
Thought Mima, who would be better able to know how to make a statement in Miss Universe than Filipino designers, whose designs combine Western and Eastern sensibilities. Filipino designers are also very familiar with the contest, she added.
"Filipino designers have the means to give Asian women a sexy but elegant look," she said.
The only article "Made in Japan" in Kato's wardrobe will be his national costume.
With the help of Filipino friends, including this writer, Mima met a handful of designers – in the making and established.
They included Rhett Eala, Jun Escario, Joel Escober, KC Pusing, Marv Dawson and some Slim's design students.
Escober was commissioned to make the Miss Japan competition smock for the playoffs and finals.
