MANILA, Philippines – A Pakistani suspected of belonging to the terrorist group Dawlah Islamiya was arrested Tuesday in Zamboanga.

The Dawlah Islamiya has links with the Islamic terrorist state and the Maute group.

Waqar Ahmad, 36, was arrested by joint agents of the Mindanao Intelligence Working Group (MITG) of the Immigration Bureau and the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Immigration commissioner Jaime Morente said on Wednesday that Ahmad's arrest was the result of "intensive monitoring" conducted for several days by members of the group of PNP intelligence in the region.

Citing international intelligence reports, Morente said that Ahmad was about to meet an Abu Sayyaf group leader in Basilan to plan a series of suicide bombings against targets in the province of Zamboanga.

"He (Ahmad) will be deported because his presence here is against national security. He also violated our immigration laws by working here without applying for a work visa, "said Morente in a statement.

According to the BI archives, Ahmad arrived in the country on April 19 and worked as a storekeeper and collector at his uncle's household appliances center in Zamboanga, even without the proper working papers.

With this arrest, Morente said that Ahmad would be included in the blacklist of the BI and that it would be forbidden to return to the country. (Editor: Mike U. Frialde)
