Palace says holiday truce intended to take troops unawares

Earlier, the Communist Party had announced that it would observe a ceasefire with government forces during the holiday season to "enjoy freely" the celebration of its 50th anniversary of foundation.

The communist truce will come into effect at 12:01 pm on December 24 at 11:59 pm. of December 26th. Another ceasefire is scheduled at 12:01 pm on December 31 at 23:59. from January 1st, 2019.

However, Lorenzana and the army did not recommend a holiday break with the communists.

Panelo said that state forces should always be ready to face any offensives from communist rebels, which he compared to a "night thief" ready to "attack" government troops .
