PH families victims of common crimes increase to 6.1% in the third quarter – SWS
The number of families victims of common law crimes rose to 6.1% in the third quarter, according to a survey conducted by social weather stations (SWS).
This equates to about 1.4 million families, 0.8% more than the 5.3% or about 1.2 million families affected in the previous quarter.
According to the survey, 5.6%, or 1.3 million families, would have been victims of property crimes – pickpocketing, burglary and car theft – an increase of 0.5% over June.
About 1.1 million families, or 4.6%, have been victims of armed robbery in the last six months, 0.6% higher than the 4% or about 930,000 families in the second quarter.
About 474,000 families, or 2%, were victims of break and enters, 0.2% higher than the 1.8% or about 431,000 families in June.
About 50,000 families owning a car, or 0.6%, have been robbed in the last six months, a slight increase from the 0.5% recorded in June.
About 159,000 families, or 0.7%, were physically abused in the last six months, an increase of 0.5% from 0.2% or about 45,000 families in June.
The same survey found that the presence of drug addicts in Metro Manila increased from 54 per cent in June to 63 per cent; 42% against 37% in June in the Visayas.
This was not the case in Mindanao where the number of drug addicts went from 38% to 30% in June; and Libra Luzon at 39% against 40% in June.
The number of families fearing burglaries has decreased in all regions except Mindanao, while those fearing unsafe streets have increased in Metro Manila and Mindanao, but have decreased in Visayas and Libra Luzon.
The survey from September 15 to 23 was conducted among 1,500 Filipinos aged 18 and over.
Its margins of sampling error were ± 3% for national percentages, ± 4% for Balance Luzon and ± 6% for the metropolitan areas of Manila, Visayas and Mindanao. RALPH VILLANUEVA
