MANILA, Philippines – It's a war between former allies in Ilocos Norte.

The representative of the 1st district of Ilocos Norte, Rodolfo Fariñas, told the Rapper that he replaced on Thursday, November 29, the former president of Barangay Bengcag, Jesus Arimbuyotan.

"I substituted Arimbuyotan for the governor as [Michael Marcos] Keon filed for the mayor of Laoag City against my niece, Chevylle [Fariñas], Said Fariñas in a Viber message.

Arimbuyotan was a last-minute candidate, candidate for governorship on the last day of the filing, on October 17.

Fariñas comes under the banner of the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan.

Keon's mother, Elizabeth Marcos-Keon, is the sister of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Chevylle is seeking re-election as Laoag's chief executive, a fief of the Fariñas clan.

Fariñas, former majority leader in the House of Representatives, will stand against Matthew Marcos Manotoc, a senior member of the district council's 2nd district council, Ilocos Norte, Marcos' grandson.

Fariñas' daughter, Ria Fariñas, a senior member of the District 1 District Board of Directors, is seeking to replace him at the 2019 Election Convention.

Manotoc initially filed for governorship, but on Thursday replaced his grandmother and sentenced to corruption, the representative of the 2nd district of Ilocos Norte, Imelda Marcos.

Manotoc is the son of Imee Marcos, governor of Ilocos Norte, who aspires to become a senator in 2019.

Since 1998, the Fariñas and Marcos families have been allied or rival to Ilocos Norte after the return of the Marcoses to the province, after the death of the patriarch of the family in exile in 1989.

In 2015, the Marcos cut ties with Fariñas and removed it from their ticket "One Ilocos Norte".

Relations between Fariñas and Marcos further deteriorated when Fariñas, as majority leader in the House, opened a congressional investigation into the alleged and abusive use of funds from the province of Ilocos Norte worth 66.45 million Swedish pesos.

The House Committee on Good Governance and Public Accountability and the Audit Commission have recommended the filing of administrative and criminal charges against officials of the provincial government of Ilocos Norte.

According to reputable sources, Imee Marcos and the mayor of Davao City, Sara Duterte Carpio, were influential figures in the ousting of former president Pantaleon Alvarez in July, which led to the dismissal of Fariñas in power. (READ: The women behind the fall of Alvarez)

Marcos denied having participated in the ousting of Alvarez, but she and Carpio were present when the new president, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, staged a "thank you dinner" a few days after she became the new Speaker of the House. – Rappler.com
