An early Christmas present greeted students from schools under the Department of Education (DepEd) on Wednesday.
DepEd has announced a 19-day vacation leave for public school students, originally scheduled for December 22 but transferred a week earlier to December 15.
The resumption of classes in public elementary and secondary schools on January 2, 2019 and the end of the school year on April 5 were left unchanged by the order.
Education Secretary, Leonor Briones, said the premature break would allow families to devote more time to their children and spare children the holiday traffic.
Briones has asked teachers not to give homework during breaks or class time next year, although it may be tempting to deal with the loss of teaching days.
"Sharper discussions"
Instead of lengthening the hours of work, educators should facilitate "sharper discussions," she said at a press conference.
"All that relates to formal learning must be implemented in the premises of the school [before the break], "she added.
Briones said that students should be able to benefit from more informal learning from parents, family and friends during the holidays, with no school workload.
"We discourage the practice of difficult duties, which the grandmother, mothers and" yayas "face," said the secretary.
