Students will have something to hope for as the Christmas holidays arrive one week earlier than planned.

The Ministry of Education (DepEd) has amended Ordinance No. 25 of 2018 postponing Christmas leave to December 15 instead of December 22.

"The Ministry of Education recognizes the importance of spending quality time with the family. The Christmas period offers Filipino learners an opportunity to strengthen their emotional ties with their families, "said the order signed by Education Sec. Leonor Briones read.

"However, December 15 will be a class day for student activities," added the order.

Students will have a 17-day break, including weekends, when classes resume on January 2, 2019.

Leslee Paradiang, a Grade 7 public school teacher, said the early break should also mean that students have to double the amount of time they spend on school work.

"Taas pa ang coverage is in the third quarter and gamay nalang ang school days in December, so need twice as much time," said Paradiang.

But she was also happy about the longer, longer break, which would give her more time with her family.

"Maka-spend more time with family and kind of maka-relax pod mi ba," she added.

Cebu City Division Director Bianito Dagatan said the school calendar is still the same.

"It's good." The intent is very clear in the order of DepEd. "The calendar days are still maintained," Dagatan said.

He reminded teachers not to spend too much on Christmas.

"To instill value and the true essence of Christmas, you do not have to organize expensive parties, but simply
coupled with love and sharing, "said Dagatan.
