The number of Filipino families who consider themselves poor has fallen to a new record of 38% in the first quarter of 2019, according to the latest survey conducted by Social Weather Stations (SWS).

This self-assessed poverty score was 12 percentage points lower than the 50% recorded in December 2018 and four percentage points below the previous record high of 42% recorded in March 2018 and September 2016.
Twenty-six percent of the 38% of self-assessed poor families have never been non-poor (still poor), 6% were not poor five or more years ago (mostly poor) and the remaining 6% were not poor. poor one to four years ago (newly poor).
The 12-percentage-point decline in the nationally self-assessed poverty rate is due to a 16 percentage point decrease in Balance Luzon (35%), 12 percentage points in Mindanao (37%) and six percentage points in Visayas (55%). and two percentage points in Metro Manila (28%).
Filipino families need a minimum monthly budget of 10,000 pesos to consider themselves nonpoor.
The same survey also revealed a new record of 27%, or about 6.8 million families, classifying their food as "poor", down seven percentage points from 34% or 7.9 million in December 2018.
The seven percentage point decline in self-perceived food poverty is due to a decline of 11 percentage points in Mindanao (27%), seven percentage points in Balance Luzon (24%) and three percentage points in Metro Manila (19%). and two percentage points in the Visayas (42%).
