I am calling Josh and I am a surf instructor from the island of Siargao in the Philippines. I have a deep love for surfing and for my community. Siargao is very handsome and I am grateful to call him at home but unfortunately we have a lot of social problems here in the Philippines. The school attendance of children is one of them. Everyone comes to Siargao to surf, escape and enjoy a moment of paradise. For this reason, there is a very strong and influential surf culture. Over the years, I have noticed that surfing has become a priority for kids rather than going to school. Even me, I spent the school working for my neighbor and as a payment, he lent me his board of directors.

In developing countries, low school enrollment and lack of education are huge obstacles to a future without poverty. Of course, you may be able to surf, but you can not feed your family or pay for health care. And so I created a way to use surfing for to keep kids in school. Grom Nation is a non-profit organization that motivates local children to participate in their education. Groms with 90% school attendance and more, as well as satisfactory grades and attitude, have access to surf lessons, coaching, surfboard rentals and skate workshops. The best directors have the opportunity to participate in grom comps. Currently, we have more than 100 surfboards, with more than 200 children participating. We take this opportunity to engage and mentor children with respect, responsibility and willingness to learn. In addition, we hold life skills workshops to increase self-esteem and increase employability.

We use surfing to build trust with island people, educate them about the dangers of gambling and alcohol abuse. . We also run girls-focused workshops on body positivity and self-esteem, as well as mental and physical health campaigns for all the kids. Helping kids in my community to surf has become my passion. I am grateful to be able to help the Groms of Siargao in a future full of opportunities.
