No flamethrower sales could save Elon Musk's dream of building a tunnel under Highway 405 in Los Angeles. The Musk's Boring Company announced Thursday that it had settled the dispute in opposition to the project and that it would not pursue.
The Boring Company is an airline of Musk since the moment it was stuck in traffic L.A. tweeted his epiphany that the solution is underground tunnels. Since then, it has become difficult to keep track of what is real, what to dream and what is a joke. Not only is the company working on tunnels in Los Angeles, but it has also contracted for pedestrian and underground car projects in Washington, DC and Chicago. But the cancellation of the Westside tunnel project is a blow to Musk's grand plan in the City of Angels.
The Los Angeles Times reports that the end of the project began shortly after the Boring Company obtained a preliminary exemption allowing it to ignore California's environmental review process and begin digging. City authorities favored Musk's plans, but a group of Westside residents filed suit in May, alleging that the tunnel violated state law.
The central argument of the group was that the Westside Tunnel was part of a larger project that the company had described with a map at the end of last year. According to the lawsuit, California law prohibits the approval of different facets of a larger project, stating that a comprehensive environmental review can not be avoided by dividing large projects into smaller pieces that , taken individually, do not appear to have a significant environmental impact ". There is some irony in the fact that Musk is trying to circumvent environmental regulations when he spends his days trying to kill the fossil fuel industry and curbing global warming with an electric car revolution .
Westside Group did not have a decision on his trial; instead, it seems that both parties have arranged. The Boring Company did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Gizmodo, but it sent NBC News a statement in which it was written:
The parties (The Boring Company, Brentwood Residents Coalition, Sunset Coalition and Wendy-Sue Rosen) have settled the case of Brentwood Residents Coalition et al. City of Los Angeles (to be confirmed – The Boring Company).
The Boring Company is no longer trying to develop the Sepulveda test tunnel but to build an operational tunnel at the Dodger stadium.
The Dodger Stadium project hopes to connect a subway station to the baseball stadium with a 3.6-mile tunnel. Sixteen passengers at a time will ride in pods traveling 150 mph on a high-speed train, according to the company. Musk also announced that a tunnel passing a little over a kilometer under Hawthorne will be open to the public on December 10, and Angelenos will be allowed to come on free walks.
The Westside Group's legal argument does not bode well for Musk's vision of a city-wide traffic solution in Los Angeles, but for the moment, he seems to have projects piecemeal to keep it busy. We really do not need an impulsive billionaire with his own underground lair to find a reason to take revenge on a society that does not understand his genius.
