Chief Justice Lucas Bersamin, 69, began serving on the Supreme Court on April 3, 2009, after incumbent President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo appointed him to the High Court as Associate Judge. .
Prior to his promotion to the highest court, Bersamin was an associate judge at the Court of Appeal, where he has been sitting since March 2003.
He earned a BA in Political Science from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1968. He studied law at the East University, completed the course in 1973 and ranked ninth. at the bar exams that year.
Bersamin exercised the law of 1974 as a partner of the law firm Purugganan, Lizardo and Bersamin until his appointment by Corazon Aquino, then president, in November 1986 as a judge in the chamber 96 of the Quezon City Regional Court of First Instance. He was 37 years old. the youngest RTC judge in Metro Manila.
In 2002, the Foundation for Judicial Excellence recognized Bersamin as an outstanding judge of the RTC and awarded him Chief Justice Jose Abad Santos' award for judicial excellence.
Bersamin belongs to a political clan of Bangued, Abra. He is the younger brother of Abra's representative, Luis Bersamin Jr., shot dead in Quezon City in December 2006.
Bersamin was the president of the 2017 Bar Examination. In 2008, he was the Law Society's Reviewer of Restorative Law.
Among the cases tried by the Supreme Court in recent years, Bersamin voted in August 2015 to grant a bond to former senator Juan Ponce Enrile in the pork barrel scam, allowed the Senator Grace Poe to run for president in 2016, to reject the looting charges against Arroyo in July 2016, allow the burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos to Libingan ng mga Bayani in November 2016, indefinitely extend martial law to Mindanao in February, order the Office of the Solicitor General to submit the Philippine National Police's drug war reports to April, and accept the quorum warranto's petition from the Duterte administration to dismiss the Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
Bersamin voted against Senator Leila de Lima's request to cancel the drug charges against her in October 2017.
