UFC Denver’s Davi Ramos claims to be better than Khabib: ‘I’m sure’ I’d beat him

Submission specialist Davi Ramos does not lack confidence.

While the Brazilian makes final preparations to take on John Gunther at UFC Denver, he told Ag Fight about his title aspirations and how he would fare in a fight against current champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

A ADCC world champion, Ramos has won most of his MMA fights by submission, which, alongside his jiu-jitsu background, leads him to believe his grappling skills far surpass Khabib’s. However, Davi also claimed to be the superior man in a possible striking affair against the champ.

“I’m more well-rounded than (Nurmagomedov),” Ramos said. “He has great wrestling, I can’t say anything about that, but you sure can’t compare his grappling with mine. I certainly see myself beating him, because I see myself as a better striker. Even though he has a lot of experience in MMA, I don’t see him being as good a striker as he should be. And you sure can’t compare his grappling with me. So I’m sure I see myself winning that fight.”

In a potential match against former champion Conor McGregor, Ramos says he wouldn’t try his luck exchanging blows with such a talented boxer, but Davi still emphasizes that he’s ready fight anywhere, be it on his feet on or on the ground.

“If I were to fight Conor McGregor, who’s an excellent boxer, I would follow my gameplan, which is to take him down and submit him. But I’m ready to fight anyone, no matter if they’re good on the ground or at striking. That’s what makes me different. But, I’m going to keep on drilling what I always have, which is to smother and submit any fighters in my division.”

Against John Gunther, whom he’s expected to meet on November 10, in Denver, Colorado, Ramos believes his grappling prowess will award him the win again, just like it did in his last two UFC fights, when he submitted both Chris Gruetzemacher and Nick Hein by way of rear-naked choke.

“Even though he is undefeated, he has only a few professional fights,” Ramos said. “He did a lot of amateur fights before turning professional, so he was some experience in MMA. He’s a wrestler, I believe he won’t change his gameplan too much, which is taking people down and controlling them. I see myself as the superior fighter in every way. My final goal is to become the champion, so whoever fights me now, it doesn’t matter if they’re coming off a win or a loss, it makes no difference to me.

“I’ve been training everything, wrestling, jiu-jitsu and striking. I feel good everywhere. Wherever the fight goes, I’ll be very well prepared, but I see this fight taking place on the ground and with me submitting him. It’s just one more step towards my goal, which is the title. He’s just another obstacle I have to overcome.”

UFC Denver will be headlined by a featherweight fight between Chan Sung Jung and Yair Rodriguez.
