Only on their ubiquitous billboards and their misleading ads were the biggest stars in football present at the pinnacle of the World Cup. It was difficult to move to Russia without seeing Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar, the three most famous footballers in the world, promoting crisps, banks, soft drinks, mobile phone packages or anything else.
For the most serious teams, and the Sunday final, these three superstars were miles away from the action. Messi was relaxing with his family in Ibiza. Ronaldo was in Turin, unveiled as a Juventus player. Neymar was back in Rio de Janeiro, posting on Instagram the proof of his many other successes, from Counter Strike to the basketball court.
He certainly stood out, compared to Ronaldo's ultimate triumph at Euro 2016, and how to win the world. The Brazil Cup was a personal quest for Neymar and Messi. This is how football is explained and sold to us now, a drama in which the actors are all individuals, and almost everything that happens is a function of their brilliance and their willingness.
That's why the Golden Ball is now seen as more prestigious than almost any real football tournament. And these tournaments themselves are sold to us as means to that end, as if the only goal of raising a trophy with your team in May was to be able to hold the golden ball in Paris seven months later. Ronaldo and Messi shared the last 10 Golden Balls among them, seven of which went to the man who just won the Champions League

This World Cup had the Looks like a repudiation of all this. Maybe not early, when Ronaldo scored his hat-trick against Spain, or when Messi responded with that unique goal against Nigeria in St. Petersburg. But certainly in the important end, where the story is made, nothing. Ronaldo was helpless as Portugal lost to Uruguay. Messi could only watch and watch Argentina torn apart by France. Neymar scored a goal against Mexico but did nothing against Belgium in the quarter-finals. All very different to see these players shred the opposition to coins for their clubs.
So why disparity? Why is the biggest show on earth infertile for the biggest showmen?
