The Phillies have acquired an infielder TJ Rivera in a minor league trade with the Pirates. Because Rivera was playing on a minor league deal and hadn’t seen any MLB action this year, he was cleared for processing after the July 30 trade deadline.

The exchange represents Rivera’s second stint in the Phils’ organization, as he signed a minor league deal with Philadelphia during the 2019-20 offseason, but was released before the opening of the 2020 summer camp of the club. Rivera joined the independent Long Island Ducks in May, but was soon inked in a juvenile contract by the Pirates and has since hit 0.249 / 0.295 / 0.389 out of 212 AP for Triple-A Indianapolis.

Rivera’s big-league resume features over 106 games and 344 PA with the Mets in 2016-17, with the Bronx native offering a very respectable 0.304 / 0.335 / 0.445 slash line in that rather brief playing time. . Rivera, however, underwent surgery on Tommy John in September 2017, and continued to deal with elbow issues before the Mets finally released him in 2019.
