Phillies – National game postponed due to COVID concerns

Tonight’s game between the Phillies and the Nationals has been postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests within the Washington organization, Jeff Passan from ESPN was among those to report. “Several players and coaches” at the club have tested positive, according to Passan, who suggests the current outbreak may be the largest MLB has seen in 2021. Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal first reported the game could be in danger.

Star shortstop Trea turner was taken out of last night’s game after testing positive, and today’s follow-up tests revealed further spread among the club. The teams are expected to play tomorrow night, although it certainly seems possible that the game is also in danger given Passan’s report that several people are now infected with the virus. Notably, tomorrow night’s game is at Max Scherzer definitive start planned before the trade deadline.

Washington is one of the teams to have crossed the 85% vaccination threshold for level 1 staff, Mark Zuckerman of MASNsports.com was among those to note. The Nationals also faced the spread of COVID early in the season, forcing the postponement of the first four games of their season.
